Brief overview and objectives

Students are taught to

  • Monitor community essentials: Perform water chlorination analysis and milk adulteration testing to prevent food and water-borne diseases.
  • Identify disease vectors: Gain hands-on expertise in Medical Entomology to recognize insects like Aedes (Dengue), Anopheles (Malaria), and mites (Scrub Typhus) for outbreak control.
  • Master diagnostic techniques: Acquire proficiency in Acid-Fast Bacilli (AFB) staining, a critical skill for the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program.
  • Assess health interventions: Use iodine testing kits to monitor salt iodization levels and ensure the prevention of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD)

Available facilities and equipments

  • Dissecting Microscopefor detailed study of insect vectors
  • Chloroscope for Measuring residual chlorine in water 
  • Milk Adulteration Kit for Detection of starch, urea, or detergents in milk samples
  • Iodine testing Kit for Monitoring salt iodization levels to prevent Goitre/IDD.

Role in teaching and research

  • Students are engaged in community-oriented epidemiological research and surveys, focusing on data collection and sample analysis during field postings to identify local health determinants and environmental risks.
  • Training students to move from textbook diagrams to real-world identification 
  • Regular practical sessions are held for undergraduate (MBBS) and postgraduate students to build competency in Environmental Health and Medical Entomology.
