Passed MBBS from Govt. Medical College, Patiala with Honor’s as second-best graduate of the University.  During graduation was awarded Merit Scholarship and 3 Silver Medals. Did MD in Medicine and DM in Cardiology from PGIMER, Chandigarh in 1985 & 87. Joined Dayanand Medical College, Ludhiana in 1988 as Lecturer and started the cardiology unit, became Reader in 94 and Professor of cardiology in 1998.

Has published 290 research papers, 140 of them in foreign Journals of repute like: The Lancet, Nature Genetics, Journal of American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology and Annals of Human Genetics. Has presented 136 papers at national and international conferences. Has contributed 84 chapters in books. Chief Editor of 7 textbooks in medicine including The Yearbook of Medicine 2018, 2019 & 2020; The Progress in Medicine & Medicine Update 2016, Postgraduate medicine textbook and four books of cardiology.  Editor of the Cardiology section of the popular API Textbook of Medicine (8^th, 9^th, 10^th, and 11^th Edition). Has been co-supervisor of 52 MD, 18 DM and 4 PhD theses.

Medical Director of Ludhiana Rotary Pacemaker Bank which has implanted 100 free pacemakers to needy patients. Senate member of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (2009-2011). Member of Governing board of Cardiology Society of India for 8 years. Elected member and now a fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Has organized 11 national level conferences. Organising secretary of APICON 2014 held in Ludhiana. Awarded Dr. K. Sharan Cardiology Excellence award by IMA India for year 2004.  Has been member of the core committee, which has formulated the Indian Guidelines Management of Hypertension in 2001, 2009, 2013 & 2019. Awarded Dr B C Roy National Award for the year 2006 for development of specialties from President of India in 2008. Awarded distinguished achiever State award from government of Punjab. Name figured in Guinness Book of World Records for creating the largest vegetable heart mosaic to create awareness.

President of the Hypertension Society of India for 2012-13. President of the Association of Physicians of India for 2016-17. Director of Physicians Research Foundation (PRF) of Association of Physicians of India for the year 2022-25. Vice President of Cardiology Society of India for years 2021-23. Chairman of Board of Management, Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot 2023 to 2028.

Professor of cardiology at Hero DMC Heart Institute, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab a 181 bedded tertiary care referral centre which runs MCI approved DM programme in cardiology from the last 15 years.
