In the last three decades, there has been a virtual revolution in the practice of Ophthalmology. New technologies are evolving practically every day with the result that the eye diseases considered incurable a few years back can now be treated successfully in a large number of patients. The Department of Ophthalmology at DMCH, Ludhiana is well equipped with all the modern equipment’s.
In the year 1968, the Eye Department was set up and Dr S S Grewal took over as Head. The first operation theater with an observation gallery was built in 1983. First Cataract surgery was performed under microscope in 1984. During the same year, the first IntraOcular Lens Conference was organized at DMCH.
In 1988, the reins of the department were taken over by Dr. R.N.Sood.The first Vitero-RetinalSurgery unit in a medical college was established at DMCH in 1999. The VRS Department is equipped with modern equipment like B-scan, FFA and Laser Photocoagulators for posterior segment diseases. In 1995, Dr. R.K. Grewal took over as Head of the Department till 2007 and he was followed by Dr. G.S. Bajwa, who led the department until 2018, after which Dr. Sumeet Chopra took over, serving as Head until 2024.
Presently, the Department is headed by Dr. Gurvinder Kaur
Specialties and Procedures
The Ophthalmology Department offers a wide range of outpatient, surgical and tertiary services for diseases of the eye and surrounding structures.
OPD Complex is equipped with Ophthalmic chair, 3 slit lamp microscopes, Humphrey Automated Perimeter, A-scan and B-scan, Autokeratometer, Indirect ophthalmoscopes, digital fundus angiography unit, Applanation tonometer and Photo Slit Lamp microscope. OCT for anterior segment and Posterior segment.
Refraction Unit has Autorefractometer Synoptophore
OT Complex is equipped with 2 latest microscopes, Ortlivitrectomy unit 0S3Vitrex,Alcon Phacoemulsification unit, Double frequency Nd-Yag laser unit
Surgical facilities available: Phacoemulsification Stitchless Cataract Surgery is performed with latest Intraocular lenses including multifocal lenses. Vitreo retinal surgeries:-All kind of Vitero retinal surgeries for retinal detachment, intraocular foreign body removal, proliferative diabetic retinopathy are performed routinely. Lid surgery Ptosis, Entropion & Oculoplasty Ectropion. Corneal Transplant, Glaucoma surgery, Squint surgery Endo Laser.
ARMD (Age related macular degeneration) treatment in the form of Anti VEGF, PDT (Photodynamic Therapy) and Photocoagulation is being routinely done.
The department is running eye bank for the last 20 years and has been doing corneal transplants for needy patients.
Monthly Eye Camps:- The department has been organising free monthly eye camps for the last 1 year in the Eye OPD at DMCH. Patients are being treated for all types of eye diseases. Selected cases are operated for cataract and glaucoma.
Speciality Clinics:- Glaucoma Clinic :- Children with congenital glaucoma are been treated. Glaucoma evaluation with the help of automated perimetry and disc evaluation are being done.
Retina Clinic for ARMD, Diabetic Retinopathy, Vascular Occlusions, Sarcoidosis Retinopathy, Retinal Tumors.
Cornea Clinic All kinds of corneal degenerations and dystrophies are being treated in the form of keratoplastry, amniotic membrane transplant and autografts.
Pojection:- Special clinics are being planned for Glaucoma Uveitis Cornea Refractive surgeries i.e. LASIK, FAMTOSECOND LASER. |
