2nd Prof. S B Khurana Memorial Oration 23rd Nov,2013
The second Prof. S B Khurana Memorial Oration was held in Dumra Auditorium. Dr Shashank R Joshi, President, Association of Physicians of India delivered the oration on the topic ‘Why are Indians prone to Diabetes and how are they managed differently’. The oration was well attended by the managing members, faculty and the medical students.
Principal Dr Daljit Singh extended warm welcome to Dr Shashank R Joshi. In his message, Dr Daljit Singh said we remember Dr Khurana as our ideal, with everlasting affection and profound respect. His clinical acumen, teaching methods, sophistication and suaveness continue to form a cherished memory that we carry within our hearts. He spoke on Dr.SB Khurana as a doyen of the medical fraternity and eminent physician par excellence.The Second Prof. S B Khurana Memorial Oration was held to commemorate the 75th Birth anniversary of Dr Khurana and inspire the young generation of doctors to tread on the path shown by him.
Chief Cardiologist & Co-ordinator of Hero DMC Heart Institute-Dr G.S Wander introduced the chief guest to the audience. In his message, Dr Wander said that Dr Shashank R. Joshi is a very reputed Adult Endocrinologist and Diabetologist (Lilawati Hospital). He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology, American College of Physicians (USA) and the Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Edin).He has more than 600 research publications to his credit and is visiting faculty to several Indian and international universities. Dr Joshi is actively involved with evidence based work in Endocrinology including Obesity, Diabetes, Growth, Thyroid, and Osteoporosis.He is president of Indian academy of diabetes & past president of RSSDI. He is president of Association of Physicians of India.
Dr.Shashank R Joshi delivered the oration in front of a packed audience on the topic of ‘Why are Indians prone to Diabetes and how are they managed differently?’ In his lecture, Dr Joshi said that Diabetes, a global public health problem, is now emerging as a major health problem and by the year 2025, three-quarters of the world's 300 million adults with diabetes will be in non-industrialized countries and almost a third in India and China alone.India currently has 65 Million type 2 diabetics & 130 million pre-diabetics. Indians are uniquely predispose to diabetes due to sedentary lifestyle, fast food & familial tedency, therefore diabetics in India is due to “Affluenza & Sedentarism. Indians are thin fat & Sarcopenic (less muscle mass) & therefore they have different phenotype compare to western population.
“To prevent Diabetes Dr. Shashank Said: My mantra is Simple i.e Eat less, eat right, eat on time, walk more, sleep well & on time, smile & be stress free”. We aim to for India to be diabetic free capital and not being the diabetic capital of the world. Talking about the APICON 2014 mega event he said- Ludhiana with host the first API annual meeting in Punjab to generate Indian evidence & research done by indians for the indian population. More than 1000 research papers will be read from across India. Apart from latest cutting edge science & path breaking discoveries Indian work in each therapy area will be told in some unique formats. Some special features features of the meeting include environmental medicine, toxicology, animal bites, legal issues, statistics & medical writing and even areas of tax planning, cell phone hazards & Clinical management issues. Medical quiz & debates will also be featured. Wife of Late Dr SB Khurana- Dr .Swaran Khurana conferred Dr Joshi with the oration award. |
