Taking into consideration the magnitude of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) prevalent in the hospitals and as an attempt to spread awareness about the Sterilization & Disinfection Practices in hospitals, DMCH organized CME “STERICON-2011” on the critical subjects of Sterilization Practices and Hospital Infection Control. The CME was formally inaugurated by the Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Sh Prem Kumar Gupta by lighting the ceremonial lamp in the presence of Principal Dr Daljit Singh, Vice-Principal Dr Jagdeep Whig, Dean Academics Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina, Medical Suptds. Dr Sandeep Puri, Dr B S Shah and Dr Ashwani Chaudhary.
Organizing Secretary-Dr B S Aulakh (Professor of Urology& Transplant Surgery and Head of Transplat Unit) extended warm welcome to the dignitaries and delegates present on the occasion. Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh said that in recent years, concerns have been raised about the standards of practice and quality control in cleaning, disinfection and sterilization (CD&S) in various hospitals all over the world. Failure to implement best practice standards and quality control in CD&S has major implications for transmission of infections to hospital patients and implied risk to the community.
In his address, Principal Dr Daljit Singh said the menance of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) has acquired wide dimensions. The HAIs are not only causing tremendous suffering for the patients but also resulting in tremendous burden for the hospitals and creating a big dent to their reputation. With the increase in the resistance of antibiotics with every passing day, the problem of HAI will soon spiral out of control
The scientific sessions held during the CME include lecture on “Stark Reality of Sterilization” by Dr. Sudhir Krishna, who has been appointed as Chairman of "Working Group" constituted by the Govt. of India on Scientific Evaluation of Sterilization Practices in India. Dr PN Kakar, Director of Anesthesiology and Critical care, Fortis Hospital, New Delhi, said prevention is primary for controlling infection in operation theaters. How hygiene is the most important pillar of controlling infection in hospital.Comprehensive lecture on “hospital Surveillance progam: Implementation & Monitoring ” by Dr. Sharmila Sengupta, Consultant Senior Microbiologist at B.L.K. Memorial Hospital, New Delhi,added that Surveillance of healthcare associated infections is the most important tool to improve patient outcome,lower the burden of desiase in a resource limited country like India, NABH- Dr. B.K. Rana elaborated on the topic NABH Accreditation: Corner stone for quality healthcare delivery.
The CME was concluded by the panel discussion on the topic “Hospitals on the path of becoming Infection Free Zone” and the panelists were Dr. J. Whig Dr. Rajoo Singh Chhina Dr. Sandeep Puri, Dr. R. K. Kaushal, Dr. Ajit Sood Dr. Sunil Katyal Dr. R.J. Singh Dr. B.K. Gill Dr. Jaspal Singh, Dr. Satpal Singh Virk, Dr. Devinder Singh and the moderator during the panel discussion was Dr. B S Aulakh The CME was well attended by Hospital Administrators, Departmental and Unit Heads of Surgical Disciplines, Anesthesiology, Microbiology and Hospital Infection Control Committee Members.
