IAPSM Conference on ‘Ageing & Health’ Dated: 8th April, 2012
The 7TH Annual Conference of Indian Association of Preventive & Social Medicine (IAPSM), Punjab Chapter was organized by Department of Community Medicine. More than 200 doctors across the state of Punjab and adjoining states participated in the conference.
The conference was inaugurated by Vice President of DMCH Managing Society- Sh Amrit Nagpal. While addressing the audience, Sh Nagpal stressed upon the need of holistic care for elderly people. This was followed by welcome address by Dr. Anurag Chuadhary, President IAPSM, Punjab Chapter & Professor & Head of Community Medicine, in which she presented the data of elderly people in 15 villages under care of the department.
Principal Dr Daljit Singh, in his address to the gathering, highlighted on the theme on ‘Ageing & Health’ and congratulated the department for organizing such a great event. Dr Kulwant Singh, Member Punjab Medical Council and Dr SS Deepti, Secretary General IAPSM, Punjab Chapter also shared their views with the audience.
The key note address on International concern for Elderly was given by Dr. Sunder Lal, Professor & Head, dept. of Community Medicine, Adesh Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (AIMSR),Bathinda in which he highlighted international and national concerns for elderly. Dr. J S Thakur, National Professional Officer, Non Communicable Diseases & Social Determinants of Health at WHO country office, New Delhi talked about Demographic transition and unfolded the ‘World Health Day’ theme.
Dr. Paramjeet Kaur, Prof. & Head, Dept. of Community Medicine, GMC, Patiala spoke on ‘Feminization of greying in India’. Social security and Health Insurance policies are very important during later years of life. This point was discussed by Dr. GPI Singh, Principal, AIMSR. Dr. Tejbir Singh, Professor & Head, Deptt. of Community Medicine, GMC, Amritsar made the audience realize about ‘ Elderly Abuse and Legal Provisions for the same’.
The common medical problems in elderly were elaborated by Dr. Sandeep Puri, Professor & Head, Deptt. of Medicine, DMCH. Principal, All Saints college of Physiotherapy, Dr. Hari Hara stressed on exercise in old age. Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Sarit Sharma, Org. Secretary including other members of the organizing committee Dr. R K Soni, Dr. Sangeeta Girdhar, Dr. Mahesh Satija, Dr. PJS Gill, Dr. P Kaushal, Dr. Vikram Gupta , Dr. Rupali Verma.
