World Suicide Prevention Day observed

World Suicide Prevention Day

To mark  ”World Suicide Prevention Day”   an event was organized in OPD Block of DMCH  by Department of Psychiatry and DMCH College of Nursing  in OPD block. During the event people was made aware about sign and symptoms of which lead to suicidal tendencies among  your near and dear ones. This year's theme for the day is ‘Creating Hope Through Action.’

Principal  Dr Sandeep Puri, Prinicpal College of Nursing Dr Triza Jiwan, Dr Ranjive Mahajan Professor & Head Department of Psychiatry, Dr Navkiran Mahajan Professor Department of Secretary and other faculty members from Department of Psychiatry were present on the occasion.

In his message, Secretary DMCH Managing Society Sh Prem Kumar said that the Department of Psychiatry DMCH has state of the art facilities to take care of the overall well being of the people including all psychiatric illness.

According to Dr Ranjive Mahajan, Professor & Head Department of Psychiatry, the incidences of suicides has arisen over the years and the main reason being too stressed and more vulnerable to the negative thoughts and surroundings around. Further he highlighted some warning signs that someone may be immediate risk for attempting suicide  are feeling hopeless or alone, withdrawing from family and friends, talking about wanting to die, talking or thinking about death often. If you know any person with these signs and symptoms, help him or her as soon as possible. 85% suicides are preventable and in every 40 second one person dies with suicide.  

Speaking on the occasion Dr Navkiran Mahajan Professor Department of Psychiatry, better mental health care, besides taking meditation, it is equally important to indulge in a physical activity or make a schedule for regular exercise and workout. Main causes of suicide are depression, schizophrenia Drug dependence and personality disorder.

Poster making competition was also organized on the occasion and a role play on Suicide Prevention was presented by BSc 3rd year students of DMCH College of Nursing  under the able guidance of Mrs Shailza Sharma, Associate Professor , Ms Jasleen Assistant Professor, Mrs Anureet and Dr Mrs Monika Stephen, College of Nursing and winning students awarded with the prizes. A video message was also shared for the general public to create awareness about suicide prevention.
