26th International Thalassemia Day
“18th Annual Medicos Blood Donation Camp”
On occasion of 26th International Thalassemia Day observed, Department of Pediatrics alongwith Department of Transfusion Medicine organized “18th Annual Medicos Blood Donation Camp” in Department of Blood Transfusion & Immuno-hematology. The camp also had sponsorship of Punjab Thalassemic Welfare Society, which is quite instrumental in organizing such voluntary blood donation camps for thalassemic children. Voluntary Blood Donation Camp by medicos of DMCH is an annual feature on International Thalassemia Day, where faculty and residents come forward in large number to support for this noble case.
Dr Amarjit Kaur (Professor & Head of Transfusion Medicine) said that Department of Transfusion Medicine at DMCH is equipped with all the latest state- of- art equipments for safe blood transfusion.
Dr Shruti Kakkar (Assistant Professor of Pediatrics & In-charge, Thalaseemia Unit n DMCH) said that children affected with ‘Thalassemia’ needs blood transfusion throughout his /her life as it is inherited hemoglobin disorder. She informed that Thalassemia Unit at DMCH is presently catering to the need of 320 children, who are being given state-of- art treatment at this centre at highly subsidized charges. Out of 320 children, 40 are adults now and four Thalassemic major have got married this year
A workshop under the theme ‘Reach the patient’ was also conducted,where parents of children had come in large number to know about the proper management of ‘thalassemic’ disease in the children. The workshop was inaugurated by Secretary of DMCH Managing Society- Sh Prem Kumar Gupta, who ensured that DMCH will never lag behind in taking constructive steps for the welfare of Thalassemic children.
As the Medico’s Voluntary Blood Donation entered its 18th year, a special Stem Cell Donor Registration Camp was also held in association with DATRI, Chennai-based NGO. Young doctors pledged to donate stem cells which can help cure more than 100 life threatening blood disorders
